About Scott Buffington
I am a system administrator by trade and a programmer, designer, writer, broadcaster (podcaster?) and Time Magazine's 2006 Man of the Year in what is becoming a minute amount of free time. I have been online and publishing on the Internet before everyone was calling their websites, "blogs". Prior to 2001 I had no official home on the web, sometime in 2001 that all changed as I began publishing a few websites.
I have been interested in computers since my brother allowed me to toy around with his Apple and IBM compatible in the early 1980s. My first programming experience was with BASIC on the Radio Shack TRS-80 around 1984. I was lucky enough to get an entry level Information Technology job in 1990 right after graduating from high school and since that time I have been working with almost all types of computer platforms. My work experience began with 10 years experience working with HP3000, MVS and z/VM. While working as a network security specialist I discovered UNIX and my career as a system administrator began. I have administrative experience with AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, BSD, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Besides system administration I have built a skill set as a web developer, web designer and programmer as well. Never one to shy away from working with any operating system I have built a unique skill set with desktops, mainframes and servers.
My wife and I and our four children live in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Children by far have been the most fulfilling experience of my life. Besides family, I enjoy many hobbies which include, weight training, tennis, homebrewing, web design and programming to name a few. I have an interest in science and electronics so I am always considering adding a new hobby, although I do put most on hold until I find time to pursue them. When the day comes that I retire, I have no shortage of interests to fill my days and nights.
All the websites I maintain are powered by my own website engine, a CMS referred to as Buff. All the programming code behind this website is written and maintained by me. The CMS, Buff vx.x is written in PHP.
I have a few personal projects that I develop and support, primarily C, Cocoa and PHP applications. I have experimented some with C++, Java, Perl, Python and Ruby and I am always learning something new. I have a passion for technology and maintain servers as a system administrator for friends even when away from work.
The Brutal Deluxe Football League is the online fantasy football league I started and support since 2002. As well as being a lot of fun, the hobby prompted myself and Alex Harden to create an NFL podcast with a fantasy football focus. During the NFL season we publish a weekly show that you can subscribe to with iTunes or download from the Brutal Deluxe webiste.
I am also a novelist having written and successfully completing two novels for NaNoWriMo. I have published one of the novels in paperback, not because it was great writing, only because I have always wanted to be able to say I wrote a book. I encourage everyone to give National Novel Writing Month a try.
