I first said this to my friend Shane. I tested the resource hog Vista for a friend and yuck. I know I will get slammed by MS fanboys but Vista really does suck.

I had ME as it came with my 1Ghz Compaq. (A machine purposely bought to run a second copy of Diablo II.) Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice... not with Vista. I'm rollin' free with Linux! Ubuntu-style. Gnome y'all, peace!

I have vista and HATE it! I had to buy a new laptop for school about 6 months ago and Vista has been a royal pain in the ...! My printer ( brand new) was not Vista ready and I had to use it with drivers that only ran the printing,no scan, no photo options for several weeks. My D-Link Wireless Router was not up to speed with my Vista operating system and for about three months the wireless part was a crap shot, now after several new uploads and much time on the phone with d-Link and ATT it works. All my old documents were on office 2000 which my new Vista ready Office 2007 will read, however I have found it to be a very arduous task, because way too often my 2007 version claims the 2000 disc it has to read is blank. So I have abandon all future efforts to use the old 2000 office software on my old pc ( which I love to type at). I also have a problem with some online pages not loading. This could be my server or even my firewall, but in my eyes I blame f-ing Vista everytime I hit refresh!

I would bet your Vista is your issue with the Internet. The friend whom I experienced Vista with was also having similar issues with their home network. How on Earth Microsoft has such issues with networking standards that have been in place for so long is beyond my comprehension. I suspect it is Microsoft's new security pieces which look so insanely deep at every piece of traffic I doubt the machines could ever be used in a production environment, at least that is how it appears to me. I am heading back to this friends house to install Ubuntu Linux. This person uses no programs that cannot be replaced with an Open Source solution.
What you might want to try Streeter is downloading Open Office which will run on both your machines. It will have no problems opening the 2000 office files and probably will work fine with the 2007 variety as well. Not sure if you are using the Microsoft alternatives because of a school requirement, but Open Office might be the answer. I would suggest Ubuntu also, but this is not a suggestion I would make for someone who does not have a backup machine in the event of issues.

Microsoft really screwed the pooch with vista. Hell, when you've lost Jim Louderback, you KNOW you've f'd up.

Scott,
Thanks for the info on open office. I may be able to get away with using it but since I purchaed the Microsoft student Office Vista junk I am going to continue using the crap! I really do not have many issues with the office stuff and the format fits easy with my school requirements. The issue is with searching on line at times and with my old system ( which is now unhooked and in the closet). I wish I was a tech wiz like you guys so I could understand all this stuff, but I am not... however I am damn good with books!!!! Thanks for all the info!

That's cool Streeter. I know when I when to University of Phoenix they required Microsoft Outlook and such. So sometimes because of requirements you are stuck with what you got.
A new Streeter Gravatar! Some baseball action!
