My New Coffee Maker

Buff News Entry
Our standard coffee maker had seen better days, so we were in the market for a new coffee maker. I have tried countless coffee makers over the years, including a Krups that ground my coffee beans and the whole nine yards. My experience with the Krups was not very good, first a latch broke that forced me to set weight on the lid to get the grinder to work. Then the grinder broke, and I picked up a new grinder, a short while later the hot plate stopped working. I paid over $100 bucks for a Krups coffee maker that broke after about two years of use.

Though I have heard mixed reviews on Mr. Coffee over the years, my first coffee maker was a Mr. Coffee and always worked well for me. Contrary to what some coffee snobs will tell you, a decent Mr. Coffee coffee maker can make a good cup of coffee. A key to getting a good coffee maker is that the hot plate works properly. My last coffee maker was a carafe, with no hot plate. The reason being is the temperature was perfect and the carafe kept it perfect for many hours. I decided to give a more traditional coffee maker with hot plate a try this time. All that being said I chose a very, very cool looking Mr. Coffee 12 Cup Coffee Maker.

This particular coffee maker is not listed on Amazon, but similar ones are, with mixed reviews. So far, I am very happy with the coffee maker. The coffee maker we purchased for just under $40 at Walmart makes a fabulous pot of coffee. A very cool feature of this coffee maker is the adjustable warmer plate. This assures you will not burn your coffee, we drank a pot that we kept warm for 4 hours today and the coffee flavor was fantastic start to finish. Over the years most of the bad coffee stories you hear from home coffee makers is that the hot plate either gets too hot and burns the coffee or is not hot enough, leaving you with bad cooled coffee.
Features:
  • Brushed Chrome Accents compliment today's kitchen trends
  • Brewing Pause 'n Serve lets you pour a cup of coffee while the coffeemaker is still brewing
  • Removable Filter Basket lifts out of Brew Basket for fast and easy filling and cleaning
  • 2-hour Auto Shut-Off keeps your coffee warm for 2 hours and then automatically shuts off
  • Delay Brew allows you to set your coffeemaker up to 24 hours in advance to begin brewing at a specific time
  • Fresh BrewTM Timer lets you know how long your coffee has been waiting for you
  • Special Cleaning Cycle makes cleaning your coffeemaker quick and easy
  • Brew Strength Selector lets you choose to make your coffee stronger
  • Adjustable Temperature Warmer Plate lets you decide how hot you want to keep your coffee
  • Dual Water Windows show the amount of water in the reservoir for accurate filling
  • Audible Ready Signals alert you when the coffeemaker has finished the brewing or cleaning cycle
  • Cord Storage safely stores excess cord to keep your countertop neat
  • Water Filtration removes up to 97% of chlorine for better tasting coffee

Nice looking appliance there. I wished for and was given the Krups Il Caffe Duomo (combo 8-cup coffee/espresso) a few years ago and it's still growing strong. It's held up pretty well. The coffee side isn't too complicated and its cone-shaped hopper is very efficient. As long as I don't lose any of the espresso side's parts and avoid breaking the glass (I have had to replace the coffee pot once due to my own clumsiness) it should hold up fine for another few years.

I have a separate espresso machine that I have used a few times, so I really wanted just a coffee maker and I did not want to go too crazy. I would have to say that the Krups combo grind and brew coffee maker will probably be my last machine of that type. Meaning my last combo grind and brew. Grinders are cheap enough that I will skip throwing that last piece that can break into the mix.

I will give this coffee maker a good test over the winter months and report back on how it is performing. The clock on the front of the coffee maker is really cool looking.

One of the bad reviews on Amazon was someone complaining about the audible ready signal. I am sorry, but unless you sleep in your kitchen, no way this thing wakes you up. It just is not that loud and certainly not annoying. Also saw a review about the coffee not being strong enough, now this was on another model. But again, I was sure to make a strong pot first, using the brew strength selector (Note: I like strong coffee) and I was not disappointed. The brew was perfectly strong!

Looks like a good appliance. I've owned many brands of coffee maker and have to say that Mr. Coffee has been one of the most reliable.

Someone complained on Amazon that the coffee wasn't strong enough? Add more coffee grounds, dimwit!

I agree with your reservations on the 'grind 'n' brew' style - more parts to break, and a bitch to clean. I've currently got a Black and Decker with a thermal carafe. It makes a good cup and the carafe keeps coffee warm all day. Only complaint is that it doesn't pour gracefully - drips on the countertop. I'll be replacing it soon. Definitely will sticking with the thermal carafe.

What about the Senseo? Are you still using it? I have mine at work, but since I'm still on the waiting list for an office I have not used it. That would be a bit obnoxious out in cubicleland.

Oh my yes, I use my Senseo daily. But when I have guests, like tonight (we had Jake's birthday party). So I needed to make several big pots of coffee and the coffee maker performed awesomely.

Everyone commented on how good the coffee was and not one person was annoyed by the subtle beeping at the end of the brewing. ;)
